My Dexter was born. Here is how this little guy came into this world:
I found out I was pregnant on 4th of July weekend 2006 during my most severe sinus infection ever. (I don't know why I remember that...I just do). We had been trying for 3 months to conceive, so we were super happy. The baby's due date was my brother's birthday, March 31st. We didn't find out if the baby was a boy or girl because we thought it would be fun to be surprised. I was 100% sure it was a girl.
On Tuesday, March 27th we went out with our friends one last time before the due date. The first time I left the house that day was at 5 pm to drop Corbin off with my sister and pick Scott up from work and then head over to meet the Bollwinkels and Hoovers for dinner. The weather was kind of warm that day, but some clouds had started to roll in. As soon as I got outside I felt a contraction. I shewed it away thinking it was just braxton hicks. During the 15 minute drive to CompUSA (where Scott worked at the time), I felt another one. It was weird.
Anyway, I picked up Scott and we met our friends at Applebee's. By this time I was having contractions every 15 minutes. I remembered being in labor with Corbin and not being allowed to eat and how much I hated that, so I ordered myself a big ol' steak and mashed potato meal and chowed down! Then we headed over to the Hoover's house and hung out for a bit and chatted. The contractions were now 7 minutes apart. At about 9:30 I decided we should probably start getting ready to head to the hospital, so we left, picked up Corbin and went home so I could shower and get the hospital bag and Corbin's overnight bag ready. After I got out of the shower I remembered that all my garments were in the dryer in the basement, so I went downstairs in a towel to get some. As I was bending down to get them out my water broke. I was so relieved that I hadn't just put on my clean garments just to get them immediately soaked with amniotic fluid!
We called Grandma Marde to tell her we were bringing Corbin by. It was 11 pm by this time. Corbin was totally wired, and if I remember correctly Marde said he didn't sleep until after around 3am or something crazy like that. Anyway, we called the hospital during the drive to Marde's and told them that the contractions were now less that 5 minutes apart. We dropped Corbin off and made it to the hospital by 11:30. They checked me and I was dilated to a 4.
The nurses mostly left us alone, which was nice, because I wasn't constantly being badgered about an epidural like they did when I was in labor with Corbin. By 1:30am my labor was intense and at some point I guess I accidentally hit the nurse call button so the nurse came in. I told her it must have been an accident, but she was like, since you look to be in serious labor lets check you anyway. I was dilated to 7. While she was in there she decided it was a good time to fill out the standard paperwork, so she started asking me all the questions she should have asked when I got there. I was in no mood to answer questions. I swear that maybe 5 minutes had gone by when that intense urge to push came. I told the nurse and I can still hear her exact words in my mind, she said, "Oh honey, I just checked you and you are a seven! Maybe you just need to use the bathroom?" I got annoyed and insisted that she check me again. She did and sure enough that baby was crowning. She stood up looking panicked. I asked if the doctor was on his way, and she said she hadn't even called him yet, and begged me not to push.
The next half hour was the hardest 30 minutes of my life. They made me wait for the doctor to arrive before I could push (keep in mind I did NOT have an epidural). Do you have any idea how difficult it is to not push when the baby is ready to be pushed. EXTREMELY difficult. The Doctor finally arrived and was barely in the room before I pushed the baby out in just two pushes. I don't remember the gender announcement, I only remember looking down and seeing that SCREAMING baby on my belly and that I was astonished to see a penis. He screamed for a good couple of hours (I should have known then that he would be my hard child!). Anyway, he was born at 2:13 am and after he came out I felt like a million bucks! I had a 4th degree tear which the doctor proceeded to stitch up WITHOUT anesthesia while he scolded me for not coming to the hospital sooner and for not getting the epidural. ("If you had the epidural the stitches wouldn't hurt" were some of his words.) What a jerk. Anyway, to this day, Dexter's birth is by far my favorite, because it was so fast, so crazy, and looking back, so fun! (I know that sounds totally weird huh!) And that is why I have gone natural ever since. Oh yeah, and by 8 in the morning there was a bunch of snow on the ground. The nurses said that they had a bunch of women in labor during the night because of the weather changing from warm to cold so quickly. Its some weird phenomena.

Five Years Ago...
Here I am just after my water had broken.
Dexy's cute little wrinkly feet.
OH! I love newborns....That wrinkly loose skin is my favorite. It makes me excited for September.
Anyway, Dexter is a sweetheart. Yes, he is a difficult child, but he is mine, and I love him so much. I'm so glad he's part of our family, and I'm so glad he was so anxious to come into the is world, and that I have such a fun birth story to tell. What a fun boy he is! I love you Dexter. Happy 5th Birthday!Posted by Rochelle Brunson at 7:00 AM

Thanks for sharing your fun & exciting (and exasperating) birth story. I love a good birth story. Sure makes you want to smack that doctor AND that nurse, though. Man!
