How I nearly killed my children

This morning I headed to the market by our house.  It has a little post office inside and I needed to send off some packages.  The packages were large and I couldn't hold them and Echo at the same time, so I grabbed a shopping cart from the corral thing outside.  I put the packages in the basket and Echo in the seat part.  Ivy didn't want to walk (as usual) so she stood on the front of the cart and we started to walk towards the building.  Right as we were reaching the building (where the parking lot turns to sidewalk) Dexter decided he wanted to ride the cart too, so he hopped onto the right side.  (here is a silly illustration to help you visualize what I'm saying).

Right when Dexter jumped onto the side of the cart was the exact moment we were transitioning from parking lot to side walk.  The cart's wheel got caught in the crack between.  That's when all hell broke loose... It all happened so fast.

The cart began to fall to right...

I tried to stop it....

Dex and Ivy fell to the ground....

The packages went flying...

The cart landed on Dex and Ivy.....

At the same time Echo came out of her seat and was literally upside down, flying through the air....

I caught her, mid-air, her head just an inch from the asphalt...

It was like a series of events that just ended in a disaster.  It seriously all happened in what couldn't have been more that 3 seconds.  It was a tense three seconds.  In the attempt to catch my eleven-month old before splitting her head on the hard asphalt, I nearly birthed the baby living in my uterus!  It took several minutes of catching my breath before we could go in the store.  Luckily, the only injury was to my foot, which I assume happened while trying to prevent the cart from falling in the first place, but I don't really know.  Both Ivy and Dexter where unharmed and thought it was so funny.  They said, "That was an AFV thing!"  Which is what they say when they think something is funny enough to be on America's Funniest Videos.

I have learned a few things from this experience.  Ivy and Dex don't get to "ride the cart" anymore, and I will ALWAYS buckle Echo into the seat from now on!

Okay, that was a scary few seconds! I'm glad that every thing worked out alright. At least your kids thought it was fun...you'll probably have nightmares...but it all ended fine, right? I loved the drawing!!!

I did the same thing with our 3 little boys inside the grocery store. The 2 older ones climbed on 1 side while the younger boy was inside the cart. I saved the baby from hitting the floor but the other 2 got creamed. Happens to everyone!

Good Save!!! I'm glad they all survived and you didn't birth your baby. My kids also love AFV, it is fun to watch it with them.

What a scary few seconds. I bet it felt like a lifetime. You told it so well, I felt like I was watching an instant replay in slow motion. And the drawing was helpful. Glad everyone was OK. And now we can all use the story as a -- "remember what happened to Rochelle and her kids" to keep our kids from hanging on the shopping cart. I already used it on my kids yesterday at the store!!;)
