A trip to the emergency room

Disclaimer: The following photos are not for the faint, so if you get at all squeamish, DO NOT scroll down.

So never since Scott and I had kids have we had to take either of them to the emergency room, until last night that is. Dexter is a little bit of a monkey and likes to climb on EVERYTHING, the kitchen table, the counter, the computer desk etc.. Everyday we say like 500 times, "Don't climb up there, you'll fall!" Well last night right after we got the boys in their jammies and were about put them to bed, he did fall. Fortunately, not from the kitchen table, counter, or desk, but from the tiny round coffee table that is only about 2 feet off the ground. Scott was on the phone with his dad so I hurried to pick him up and brought him into better light in the kitchen to look for any injuries. That is when I noticed the blood gushing from his mouth. Scott quickly got off the phone and we tried to look past the blood and see what happened, we could see that the blood was coming from his tongue so we cleaned it up a bit and discussed whether we thought it was bad enough to take him to the emergency room. Right then he let out a big cry and stuck his tongue out, and we both said together, "We have to go." He had chomped a huge chunk so that it was just hanging there, he actually bit completely through!

So these photos don't show how the cut is completely through (its hard to get pictures of a 17 month olds tongue!) but you get the idea. On the last picture if you look at his left (your right) you can see the chunk sticking out the corner of his mouth. So gross! It makes me cringe just thinking about it. Anyway, we ended up taking him to the emergency room, and they gave him some tylenol and said that was all they could do, they don't stitch up a tongue unless it is cut more than half way. The ER doctor assured us that it would heal back together and that it would look totally normal again, but Scott and I are both skeptical.

Oh grass, how we've missed you!! (kinda long, sorry)

Finally, after just two months of living in our new house we have finished our backyard!! Except for an add-on to our patio, which will hopefully be done next summer, and a vegetable garden (also next summer). We have been working very hard to make it useable, and by "we" I mean mostly Scott, I got to play the pregnancy card a lot. Anyway, the backyard started out as a jungle of weeds when we moved in, some taller than the fence. Pulling the weeds (which I actually helped a lot with) took up the biggest majority of time. It was hard work and we encountered more bugs and spiders than I would ever like to see again. For those of you that really know me, the spiders were a little more than I could handle. I ran screaming and freaking out on many occasions.
After all the weeds were gone we rented a trencher and Scott's little brother, Shawn came over to help us get all the trenching done for our new sprinkler system (the house came with a system in the front yard, but not the backyard).
After the yard was dug up ready for piping, Scott spent the next 4 days or so laying pipe and making his own custom system. Thanks to Scott's dad for teaching him the ups and downs of how to lay a sprinkler system! It turned out great! I felt like a single mom for those few days since scott spent every possible second that he wasn't at work out in the yard, but it was worth it. Once all the piping was ready to go the boys and I came out and "helped" put the dirt back in the trenches. I actually did a lot of the putting dirt back, since it was something I could manage without putting myself or the baby at risk.
Once that was all done Scott leveled the yard and we anticipated getting grass. It finally came yesterday and Scott's brothers, Russell and Shawn came to help roll it out, along with his cousin Vanessa's husband John, who happened to be in town. What a good sport! The boys were barely able to finish before dark. It is so beautiful, and we are so excited to have our first ever functioning backyard since we got married. Thanks to everyone for all their hard work, especially Scott who did much of the work himself in 90+ degree weather. Check out our slide show if you want to see the whole process illustrated for you.

Miracles do happen!!

Just an update on our precious baby girls heart condition. Scott and I had our appointment with the baby's cardiologist today, and he was able to get a better look at her heart (due to the fact that it has been 2 months and she has grown a lot since June). I am happy to report some good news, the condition is not as bad as we had thought. Dr. Womack (the cardiologist, obviously) looked at the baby for probably about an hour (which was excruciating for my back) and was able to see that indeed the left side of the heart is smaller than it should be, but is functioning well. This was awesome news because it basically means the baby does not have Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome ( It is hypoplastic in that it is underdeveloped, but is not as extreme) like we thought. The main problem is that the aeorta is either pinched off or stops all together, therefore she will need surgery to correct it within her first week of life. This means that we will still have to go to University Hospital/Primary childrens in Salt Lake City to deliver the baby so she is able to have the surgery as soon as possible. She will also need two subsequent surgeries to repair some other small problems that will arise as she grows, but they are minor. Dr. Womack was also able to see that the problem he thought he saw in the previous ultrasound that led him to believe that the baby would have down syndrome, was wrong, and he no longer thinks that will happen (unless by coincedence). We still don't have a date that we will be in Salt Lake to be induced, but we were told that we will need to be there in the next 4 to 6 weeks to meet the surgeons, and allow them to do their own assessment of everything. At that time we will be able to schedule the induction and have a clearer view of things to come.
We just want to thank all of you who have fasted and prayed on our behalf, we have felt so much love over these past two months, and feel very blessed. We want everyone to know that MIRACLES DO HAPPEN, and Heavenly Father does answer prayers. It is true that our baby is not perfect and will have hardships, but it could be a lot worse. We feel like we couldn't have recieved better news. As soon as we know when we will be in town to meet the surgeons, we will let all of you Utahns know. Thank you all for your love and support.

One of my favorite things--gone forever!

So one of my favorite things about Dexter is his crazy curly hair. I loved how it was all over the place and had such cute curls on the bottom. I always thought he looked like a little blonde surfer boy. But lately, I have been getting to many "girl" comments. People I don't know saying what a beautiful little girl you have. How old is she? Have a nice day ladies! It was too much, he's a boy! Just because he is cute doesn't mean he is a girl!! So last night Scott and I did the unthinkable, and chopped off those beautiful curly locks! The only problem, neither of us know how to cut hair. We took turns holding him down while the other cut, and I am not sure about how it turned out. When we cut Corbin's hair for the first time my sister Maxine did it, because she has experience. Part of me wanted to wait til we are in Salt Lake in November to have her cut dexter's. By then his hair would be halfway down his back so we did it now. So anyway here are some pics of the whole experience. I also managed to keep a few of his curls for the scrapbook, because if his hair is anything like Corbin's, those curls will never come back. Front of hair before the cut.
Back of hair before the cut.
During the cut.
Side view after the cut, does anyone else think it looks like a trump combover?!
Hmmmm....Success?? I am not sure, but this is the finished product. At least his face is still cute!

Corbin has glasses

Last week Corbin had an appointment with the opthomologist and we discovered that I am not crazy and he indeed has lazy eye in his right eye. He is also very near sighted, and thus had to get glasses. He picked out his own pair (the ear pieces are blue, if you can't tell), and was very excited to get to "look like daddy." Luckily, he doesn't need an eyepatch right now, he has to go back at the end of september to make sure it is getting better, if at that point it hasn't then he will have to get a patch. He looks so adorable in his sweet little glasses, it brings warmth to my heart. They of course, make his big blue eyes even bigger, but it is just so dang cute.

Without a sound

So yesterday I decided it was time for Dex to make the move into Corbin's room. Scott and I decided it would be good if Corbin and Dex could share a room, so since we moved into our house we have been slowly taking steps to make that happen. We have told Corbin all along that he and Dex would be sharing, and even decorated the room with both of their cross-stitches and wood letters as if they were already sharing. Basically, the room was just missing Dex and his bed. So last night was the first night with the two of them together, we put dex to bed first and then Corbin about 45 minutes later. We told Corbin to be quiet and not wake his brother and he complied. It went really well. I checked on them at about midnight, and they were both asleep in their own beds. When I woke up at 5:ooam to use the bathroom I decided to check them again, still sleeping in their own beds. Then morning came, and Dex started to cry at his usual time, about 8:15. I go in to get him before he wakes up Corbin, and find Dex in Corbins bed, and Corbin asleep on the floor. So basically, sometime between 5 and 8:15 am, Dex got in bed with Corbin and Corbin moved to the floor, without a sound. I can't believe I had no idea they had moved around. I started laughing and woke up corbin, so I asked him what happened and all he said was "Dex took my bed." So I don't know what happened, but at least they didn't fight right! I still think it is a success. Hopefully Corbin won't have to wake up on the floor every morning.
