So never since Scott and I had kids have we had to take either of them to the emergency room, until last night that is. Dexter is a little bit of a monkey and likes to climb on EVERYTHING, the kitchen table, the counter, the computer desk etc.. Everyday we say like 500 times, "Don't climb up there, you'll fall!" Well last night right after we got the boys in their jammies and were about put them to bed, he did fall. Fortunately, not from the kitchen table, counter, or desk, but from the tiny round coffee table that is only about 2 feet off the ground. Scott was on the phone with his dad so I hurried to pick him up and brought him into better light in the kitchen to look for any injuries. That is when I noticed the blood gushing from his mouth. Scott quickly got off the phone and we tried to look past the blood and see what happened, we could see that the blood was coming from his tongue so we cleaned it up a bit and discussed whether we thought it was bad enough to take him to the emergency room. Right then he let out a big cry and stuck his tongue out, and we both said together, "We have to go." He had chomped a huge chunk so that it was just hanging there, he actually bit completely through!

So these photos don't show how the cut is completely through (its hard to get pictures of a 17 month olds tongue!) but you get the idea. On the last picture if you look at his left (your right) you can see the chunk sticking out the corner of his mouth. So gross! It makes me cringe just thinking about it. Anyway, we ended up taking him to the emergency room, and they gave him some tylenol and said that was all they could do, they don't stitch up a tongue unless it is cut more than half way. The ER doctor assured us that it would heal back together and that it would look totally normal again, but Scott and I are both skeptical.

sounds like you had as much fun yesterday as i did. we now know that jesse boys is deathly allergic to bee stings. 8 hours in the ER. No fun. Poor Dexy, I hope he feels better soon!
Oh man I can't believe that they can't do anything about it. I mean not to be gross, but couldn't he bite it off on accident, I mean he is a 17 month old. Poor guys. But really it is amazing that with 2 boys you had made it that long without a ER visit. Hope it heals soon.
ewww! That does not look fun, I hope it gets better soon. Poor little guy, I hate when I bite the inside of my cheek and it leaves a little bump and it never fails I always end up biting the same spot again, hopefully he wont accidently bite it off.
That looks so gross! The mouth is one of the worst places for bleeding. Brax got hurt there once when he was like one, and that bugger bled like crazy so I couldn't even see the gash. What a trooper Dex is. Hope it heals soon!
Oh my goodness! That is so wild. I hope it doesn't bother him too much. Too bad that after the ER visit there wasn't much they could do much.
Yikes. That is soooo sad. Poor guy. I hope it doesn't hurt him still and that it heals fast. Ouch!!
That is awful. Poor little guy. I thought you got some really good pictures for a 17 month old. I am dreading the day we have to take Anna to the ER. Luckily she is a pretty cautious child, but accidents happen. I think it is pretty crazy that it should just heal all by itself. You will have to post before and after pictures to see the healing progress.
