This isn't about twilight, so all you twi-hards don't get excited.
A couple of weeks ago we were walking through DI (as we often do on Saturdays), and I was rummaging through the books and I came across The Time Travelers Wife. I had heard of the movie, and wanted to see it. I'm always imagining what a book would be like as a movie and this one was already on my netflix list, so I thought it might be cool to read the book and then watch the movie and compare (it didn't hurt that the book was only 3 bucks). So I did. Here are my thoughts.
BAD IDEA!! First I must say, I really enjoyed the book, in spite of its use of offensive language, some pretty graphic sex scenes, (which didn't matter if I skipped them) and some alcoholism and drug use. It was still really interesting and entertaining, and I had a hard time putting it down. I thought it was such an original idea.....
Then came the movie. The good thing about it was that all the things listed above that I didn't like about the book were pretty much gone from the movie, unfortunately so was everything else! It was SO DIFFERENT (as movies usually are). It seemed so much like it was just trying to speed through things and hit only the parts that were super important. I hated it. I was so disappointed about a lot of the stuff they skipped over, or changed around, stuff that I thought was important. Like Clare's mom dying....she doesn't die in the movie, and that annoys me. It was such a pivotal part of Clare's life in the book, and I couldn't believe it was gone. UGH....I'm so annoyed. I think this is the first and last time I'm going to experiment with book vs movie.....movies just can't live up to books and I'll always be disappointed.

I know, you can only like a movie for what it is or a book for what it is but they can't compare. I did this recently as well. I have been going to the library lately and they didn't have the book I wanted so at the last minute I grabbed Dear John. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked the book( I thought it might be a little too sappy even for me). So i thought I would rent the movie and it was HORRIBLE! Completely different ending, all the emotion was lost, I hated it:(
So is the movie worth seeing if I DON'T plan to read the book? Can it stand alone? Would it make sense and/or be enjoyable do you think?
So ,Chelle you know me I don't read alot....but after I talked to you the other day, me and your dad went to get a couple of movies. I got "The Time Travelers Wife", and your dad got "Sherlock Holmes".I wasn't thrilled with the movie I chose, it was okay, but that's it just okay. I liked your dad's pick better, and I thought it was okay also.
I read the book to and haven't heard a good thing about the movie, so your testimony has sealed my desire to see it. I don't have any time to waste.
I agree, I recently read the whole Harry Potter series and I had already seen all of the movies. I don't remember being emotionally touched by any of the movies but the books made me crack up laughing at parts and chin quivering cry at others, they were excellent and after reading the books the movies don't even compare. And yes I realize that they are kids books but they were still excellent.
I've heard the same thing from girls in my book club. I haven't read the book (though I've heard it's worth it) and don't plan on seeing the movie anytime soon.
Just out of curiosity, what would you rate the book or would you recommend it to me?
